Altering Your Perspective

I am capable. I am worthy. I am enough.

Say it with me, “I am capable. I am worthy. I am enough.” Now, place your hand over your heart and one more time with meaning, “I am capable. I am worthy. I am enough.”

I spend so much time caught up in who I am not and where I am not that I often forget all that I am. It is so easy to hyperfocus on every little mistake or shortcoming and step backward. It is so easy to obsess over everything we need to do and ruminate on the “should’ve, would’ve, could've” that we are blinded by the moments we don’t shine.

I often imagined what life would be like if I reframed the negatives with opportunity instead of shame and regret. Instead of saying, “I have not accomplished the goal,” I could add the word, “yet.” “I have not accomplished the goal” fills me with shame and disappointment, but “I have not accomplished the goal YET” fills me with hope for the possibility of reaching it. Instead of feeling defeated, I feel motivated.

Another phrase I get caught in is, “What if it doesn’t work out? What if I don’t succeed?” The questions of doubt make me feel inferior and inadequate. But, even if the odds are stacked against me, no matter how small the percentage of achievement is, there is a slight possibility of success. Therefore, I can ask myself, “What if it does work out? What if I succeed?” Then, I imagine that moment. Who will be there with me? What will that moment feel like? How will life look? Instead of feeling overwhelmed and frightened, I feel confident and courageous.

Sometimes, I get overwhelmed by what to do next. There are too many options, and yet, every single one of them feels like it will take me in the wrong direction. I feel pressured to be perfect, but instead, life feels rushed. I feel frustrated with myself, humiliated by every perceived failure, and betrayed by my brain. I could indulge myself in despair, perplexed by what’s next, or I can trust in myself to know what’s right for me and be confident in my ability to learn and grow through every misstep. In fact, every wrong turn reveals another path, offers me a different direction, and takes me to a new place, possibly one that is much better than I ever expected or could have dreamed. Paralyzed in fear of what to do, where to go, and how to be, or inspired by possibility – the choice is mine.

I have spent so much time dwelling on the past, skeptical about the future, nauseated by the confusion, persecuted by fate, and powerless against time.

Perspective alterations have taken what made me feel victimized and turned it into hope.

Feeling probed or curious, feeling worthless or worthy, feeling dismissive or eager – only I can decide. I have the power to alter my perspective and change my day for the better.
